Gain controlled amplifiers are sometimes single chassis or a cascaded set of modules where the middle module is a quasi-linear PIN diode attenuator, typically an octave wide. This modular approach avoids the necessity of a special design as the input and output modules are normally standard products and have standard cascaded packaging.

Multi-octave amplifier gain control can be done but is more challenging depending upon the gain control range. We normally try to incorporate the gain control in a compact form.
