Pulse Modulated Amplifiers, or Pulsed amplifiers, differ from Pulse Amplifiers in that they are designed to be turned off and on by a pulse as opposed to an amplifier that amplifies pulses.

Amplifiers are pulsed on and off in order to achieve a high isolation during the off period. This may be used to avoid saturation of a receiver during a high level signal input such as the transmit pulse in a RADAR system.

In order to be turned back on during the received signal period, this must be done in the order of a microsecond, or several microseconds, which cannot be achieved by just turning on and off the external supply voltage.
